URA releases RFP for marina at SouthSide Works

October 6, 2009

The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) has released a request for proposals for the development and operation of a marina along the Monongahela River, adjacent to the South Side and South Shore Riverfront parks, and the SouthSide Works development.

Developers are sought to provide and maintain a full-service, high-quality Marina that offers boating services and other amenities.

"Returning our riverfronts to the public for recreation is vital," Mayor Luke Ravenstahl said. "These are our most treasured assets and our goal is to increase Pittsburgher's access to riverfront amenities."

The new marina will enhance the existing and planned public parks - South Side Riverfront and South Shore Riverfront parks - as well as the adjacent mixed-use development SouthSide Works and create a viable service for the recreational boating community.

"This is the first step in a larger plan to reconnect our waterways to one another" Rob Stephany, executive director, URA said. "It's very exciting that soon your boating experience can include dinner at South Side Works, and a game at PNC Park or Heinz Field."

Proposals should indicate how many slips would be made available to leaseholders and non-leaseholders, and submitters are encouraged to develop a plan for off-site boat storage and dock collapse during the off season. Design and operation of the proposed marina should match the community's revitalization goals, while not impeding the region's river-based transportation and commerce.

The developer with the highest quality plan will be selected to enter into an exclusive negotiation period to enable the parties to undertake due diligence and establish a firm development schedule.

Proposals are due October 28, 2009. To obtain a copy of this Request for Proposal, visit
