Post Office offering Inauguration souvenir
January 6, 2009
According to the U.S. Constitution, only one thing is required for the inauguration of a president — the oath of office: “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”
On January 20, President-Elect Barack Obama will take the oath, becoming America's 44th president, before delivering his inaugural address.
In observance of the inauguration, the Postal Service is offering a philatelic folio which includes a collectible stamped envelope with silk portraits of Barack Obama and Vice President-Elect Joseph Biden, and a digital color postmark dated January 20, 2009.
The folio also includes photographs of the newly elected president and vice-president and biographical information, a brief history on inaugural tradition and the presidential oath of office.
The commemorative folio is $14.95. Pre-orders are now being accepted at usps.com/shop and will be shipped starting January 20. Official sales also begin January 20 at select Post Offices, usps.com or by calling 800-STAMP24.
