Seminar for those training for Pittsburgh Marathon

 As medical sponsor of the 2009 Dick's Sporting Goods/Pittsburgh Marathon, UPMC Sports Medicine will host the first of three free training seminars for marathon participants.

“Getting Started: Marathon Training and Preparation,” will be held at 10 a.m., Jan. 10, 2009 in Room S100A of the University of Pittsburgh's Biomedical Science Tower (BST) South, located at 3501 Fifth Ave., Oakland.

 The seminar will offer valuable information and training tips to runners and walkers preparing for the marathon. Topics and speakers will include:

• A welcome message from marathon race director Patrice Matamoros

 • “Training for your first marathon” by Abe Friedman, M.D., UPMC Shadyside cardiologist and longtime marathon runner

 • “Eating 101: A Primer on Fueling for a Marathon” by Leslie Bonci, R.D., director of nutrition at the UPMC Center for Sports Medicine

 • “Developing a Mental Map” by Aimee Kimball, Ph.D., director of mental training at the UPMC Center for Sports Medicine

 Remaining seminars in the series will include “Keeping the Pace” on Feb. 7 and “Going the Distance” on March 14. For more information, visit or call 412-392-1021.

 In addition to the free training seminars, UPMC Sports Medicine will provide medical support along the race course and at the start and finish lines. The medical team, including doctors, registered nurses, physician assistants, EMT's, certified athletic trainers and rehabilitation specialists, will provide the necessary medical attention to any runner in need.

UPMC has provided free training seminars, and with the City of Pittsburgh Bureau of EMS, has provided comprehensive race-day medical team coverage for every Pittsburgh Marathon since the first race in 1985. For more information, visit
