Unprecedented Response Prompts District to Extend Magnet Registration Deadline to December 19th

December 16, 2008

The Pittsburgh Public Schools has extended its Magnet Registration deadline from December 12 to December 19.

The deadline has been extended to provide interested families additional time to submit magnet applications and any additional supplements. This year students and families are able to apply to three magnet options in order of preference. The extension applies to all magnet schools except Pittsburgh CAPA 6-12, which deadline for application was November 21, 2008. Magnet applications can be mailed to the District Magnet Office, located in the Administration Building at 341 S. Bellefield Avenue, Pittsburgh PA 15213.

If the number of applications submitted for any magnet program exceeds the number of available spots, a lottery will be used to determine the order in which applicants will be accepted. The computerized lottery will take place December 23, 2008. If a student is not selected in the lottery for any of their top three choices the student is placed on a waiting list.

Parents will be notified in January, by mail, of their child's acceptance or waiting list position. Applications received after December 19th will not be eligible for the lottery. For complete information on magnet registration and an application visit the District's website at http://www.pps.k12.pa.us or call the Parent Hotline at 412-622-7920.

Children residing in the City of Pittsburgh, who enroll in the Pittsburgh Public Schools, can take advantage of magnet schools and programs, excellent neighborhood schools, and upon graduation may be eligible to receive scholarships through The Pittsburgh Promise. Magnet options in the Pittsburgh Public Schools include schools/programs that provide a specific education model, such as the Montessori Method, or a theme-based program focusing on a student's specific talents or interests.

Students who enroll in a magnet program are expected to remain in the program for at least one school year and must maintain satisfactory attendance, citizenship and academic progress.

Currently the District offers 30 magnet options across the region served by the Pittsburgh Public Schools. The chart below summarizes the available magnet schools and programs by geographic region and grade configuration.
