Still time to sign up for Tree Tender Course

Friends of the Pittsburgh Urban Forest is offering a Tree Tender Course in Carrick on three evenings: July 29, August 5 and August 12.

The course will cover a variety of topics: the care of young trees in the area so that they survive to grow into large shade trees, which are good for removing particulate matter from the air, keeping storm water from flooding streams, cooling streets and homes, and adding beauty to the neighborhoods.

Those who complete the course to become a tree tender can apply for between 10-100

street trees and plant them with the support of the Friends of the Pittsburgh Urban Forest in the neighborhood.

The street trees are provided by TreeVitalize Pittsburgh, a joint program of the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, the DCNR, and the City of Pittsburgh.

The course is $40, and scholarships are available. The course is 5:30-8:30 p.m. each of the evenings and dinner is provided. Local tree experts cover everything from tree biology, to history, to pruning. Future workshops will have topics including tree identification, pruning, and any social events FPUF plans.

Registration is open online: Those who want to take a course but are not available for the Carrick dates, may register a course that is more convenient.
