Black Sheep Puppet Festival to feature local performers

September 18, 2007

The Black Sheep Puppet Festival, Oct. 19-28 at the Brew House, 2100 Mary Street on South Side, is the longest running yearly puppet festival in the country will focus on local performers for its Ninth Annual event.

The festival known for bringing the most avant-garde independent puppetry artists from around the world to Pittsburgh will instead fix the spotlight on a dozen Pittsburgh artists from different backgrounds. The change to local artists was chosen by curator Tom Sarver, with the aim of unifying the local puppetry scene in preparation for the 2008 Tenth Annual event. Free workshops for puppeteers and children, along with a gallery exhibit, two nights of performance, and two family-friendly matinees make up this year's events.

The annual event brings together local and national puppet companies for performances and educational opportunities. The Black Sheep is an international showcase of contemporary innovations in puppetry as an art form and performance medium. It is well known in the field for its willingness to embrace bold experimentation and ability to challenge the boundaries of this ancient and traditional art.

Now in its ninth year, it is also one of the longest and steadiest festivals in the world. The festival includes puppet performances and educational workshops. Demonstrations of various types of puppets by collectors and artists will be featured at the gallery opening and periodically throughout the festival. The festival will also present a networking and information-gathering opportunity for an artist who wishes to pursue a career in puppetry. Their goal is to bring the art of puppetry, with all of its potential and beauty, intellect and fun to the Pittsburgh community.
