Transit tunnel work requires rerouting of bus, trolley traffic over hilltop

Port Authority crews shifted their rail replacement work near South Hills Junction to outbound tracks near the south portal of the Mt. Washington Transit Tunnel causing changes to T operations and some bus detours for approximately three weeks.

Port Authority customers are being advised that delays are possible.

In an effort to minimize any delays, Port Authority will operate inbound rail service through the Mt. Washington Transit Tunnel and outbound rail service via the Allentown Line at all times except weekdays between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., when inbound rail service will operate via Allentown and outbound service will operate via the Mt. Washington Transit Tunnel.

Customers who board or alight light rail vehicles at Station Square Station should be aware that inbound and outbound cars at that station will serve only the inbound platforms.

Rail service from Station Square Station to Downtown Pittsburgh will be provided at all times except weekdays between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. During those six weekday hours, customers at Station Square Station destined for Downtown may board any inbound bus at the stop on East Carson Street at Smithfield Street, across from the T station. Rail service from Downtown Pittsburgh to Station Square Station will operate only on weekdays between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.

At all other times, customers in Downtown Pittsburgh destined for Station Square Station should board any 41 or 46 series buses, or the 51A Arlington Heights or 51C Carrick routes, on Wood Street or Smithfield Street.

52 Allentown rail service will operate on its regular schedule, and 46K Beltzhoover-Knoxville-Bon Air bus service that normally operates through Allentown will continue to do so. Some Allentown customers may also use regularly scheduled 51A Arlington Heights or 54C North Side-Strip District-Oakland-South Side bus service.

Customers in Allentown are advised that all detoured buses and 42S South Hills Village via Beechview, 42M Mt. Lebanon, 47S South Hills Village via Overbrook and 47L Library rail service will not pick up or discharge passengers in Allentown.

This work will also detour 18 Port Authority bus routes: 41A Pioneer Avenue, 41B Bower Hill, 41C Cedar Boulevard, 41D Brookline, 41E Mt. Washington, 41G Dormont, 46A Brentwood, 46B Baldwin Manor, 46D Curry, 46F Baldwin Highlands, 46G Elizabeth, 46H Pleasant Hills, 46K Beltzhoover-Knoxville-Bon Air, BM Baldwin Manor Flyer, BR Brentwood Flyer, CL Clairton Flyer, E Elizabeth Flyer and JL Jefferson-Large Flyer.

On weekdays, these routes will operate inbound via the Wabash Tunnel from the start of the service until 1:30 p.m. and via Allentown from 1:30 p.m. until the end of service. On weekdays, these routes will operate outbound via Allentown from the start of service until 3 p.m. and via the Wabash Tunnel from 3 p.m. until the end of service. On weekends, all detoured buses will operate inbound via Allentown and outbound via the Wabash Tunnel.
