Henry Kaufmann House benefits from annual Day of Caring
September 12, 2006
Twenty human whirlwinds blew through The Brashear Association's Henry Kaufmann Neighborhood House and left the place clean, landscaped, and well-fed!
The whirlwinds all came from Mellon Financial Corporation as participants in United Way's annual Day of Caring. The Brashear Association was chosen by Mellon as one of several projects. While Brashear kept 20 volunteers busy, hundreds of Mellon volunteers worked throughout the Pittsburgh area.
At the Kaufmann Center, the Mellon volunteers did a little of everything. The “outdoor crew” cleaned the front of the building, weeding and mulching the planted areas. After several hours work in the hot sun, the crew decided to take on another project. They washed walls on the lower level of the center, finishing three rooms before the end of the day.
A large group of volunteers chose to work with consumers in the adult day care operated by Allentown Senior Citizens Center. Under the direction of ADC nurse Audrey Mazon, volunteers and consumers participated in daily living activities, exercised, played skill games, and made apple pies. Pies were made for each volunteer and every consumer took one home as well.
The Day of Caring project at Kaufmann Center received extra support from Arlington Meals-On-Wheels which provided lunch for all. PA Cleanways and Duquesne University contributed clean-up supplies.
