Childhood obesity prevention is topic for Downtown summit

Highmark Inc., along with its regional partners, will present a childhood obesity prevention event for professionals and the public on Saturday, Sept. 16 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, Downtown.
The Highmark Childhood Obesity Summit will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will discuss regional solutions and showcase efforts and best practices to address childhood obesity.
Professional sessions will focus on how: medical professionals can enhance overweight treatment and influence community change; individuals can mobilize communities to adopt healthier lifestyles; architects and community planners can design healthier communities; and, administrators, educators and others can create policies within schools to promote better nutrition and physical activity.
Professionals interested in registering for the summit should visit http://www.highmark childhoodobesitysummit.org. Continuing education credits are available for attendees. The $35 summit fee covers the cost of the credits as well as other direct expenses.
A free public event, “Bounce, Make a Healthy Impact,” is geared toward improving children's health through increased physical activity and improved nutrition. Families can take part in interactive exhibits from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. by strolling through “BounceBurgh,” a healthy mini-community where they will be able to take part in fun exhibits and presentations from regional programs and organizations; games and sports geared to help children stay active; hands-on activities; and, creative ways to teach healthier eating habits.
Additionally, parents and children will have the opportunity to see performances in the “Bounce Hall,” featuring Vanessa Anne Hudgens, who will perform at 11:30 a.m., 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. For more information visit http://www.bouncepittsburgh.org.
