Rex Glass celebrates 50th by helping housing initiatives

After a tour of one of the new homes in the Hilltop Housing Initiative development, Mark Bibro, vice president of Fundraising for South Side Local Development Company, recognizes Don Rectenwald of Rex Glass & Mirror for his financial contribution and dedication to local housing initiatives.

Rex Glass & Mirror has long worked on the South Side. As the company nears its 50th Anniversary in 2008, company officials started to make plans that would both highlight the company as well as benefit the community.

Rex Glass employee and South Side Local Development Company board member Carol Page recognized the opportunity to pair up the company and the neighborhood in a more direct manner.

Don Rectenwald, owner of the company has been a longtime advocate of housing initiatives. Therefore, his financial contribution to South Side Local Development Company – presently involved in two South Pittsburgh residential developments – was a fitting choice.

“Rex Glass & Mirror has shown its commitment to the Pittsburgh community for nearly 50 years, and Don Rectenwald epitomizes that dedication. The contribution of Rex Glass & Mirror will be used to help us facilitate and improve the housing options for the residents of South Pittsburgh,” says Rick Belloli, executive director of South Side Local Development Company.

Rex Glass & Mirror is a family owned and operated business that has been serving Pittsburgh since 1958. South Side Local Development Company is a non-profit community development organization committed to the historic preservation and economic development of Pittsburgh's South Side.

South Side Local Development Company with various partners recently completed one long-awaited South Pittsburgh residential development (Bausman Street Independent Living), and is nearly finished with a second (Hilltop Housing Initiative, Phase 1).

The Bausman Street development provides high quality housing options with access to in-home services for very low-income disabled individuals.

The Hilltop Housing Initiative is a 50-unit affordable housing development intended to revitalize Pittsburgh's Allentown, Beltzhoover and Knoxville neighborhoods. The first eight homes are now available for sale. For more information , contact the SSLDC at 412-481-0651.
