Fontana appointed to chair veterans affairs committee

State Senator Wayne Fontana was appointed Democratic chairman of the Senate Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee on June 17.

“I am honored to serve as Democratic chairman of such an important committee,” Fontana said. “Especially at this pivotal time when it is crucial that our National Guard personnel be well staffed and have the best equipment and training available to support national objectives as well as fulfill local duties.”

Fontana (D-Brookline) said the Pennsylvania National Guard has already deployed over 2,300 personnel to Iraq, and another 2,200 are in the process of being deployed. This represents the largest deployment of Pennsylvania National Guard troops since World War II.

The Brookline lawmaker added that he would also use his committee clout to fight proposed base closings in the Pittsburgh region.

Fontana said he would also work hard to see that Pennsylvania's war veterans receive the best services available.

“Pennsylvania's veterans and their families deserve nothing less than the best, Fontana said. “I will do everything I can to fight for them, just as they have fought for all of us over the years.”

According to the latest statistics, Pennsylvania is home to nearly 1.2 million war veterans - one of the largest veteran populations in America.

Fontana was also appointed to the Senate committees on Policy, Aging and Youth, Environmental Resources and Energy, Local Government, State Government, and Urban Affairs and Housing.

“During the legislative process, the bulk of the work is done in committee,” Fontana said. “I am pleased with my assignments and eager to get started.”

Senate Democratic Leader Robert J. Mellow issued the Democratic committee assignments.

Fontana was vice president of Allegheny County Council since 2000 before being elected to the Senate May 17. He replaces state Auditor General Jack Wagner.
