Skills for Success workshops help families reach personal goals

The month of May provided a series of valuable opportunities for South Pittsburgh residents who attended the Skills for Success workshops sponsored by the Brashear Association. Each Wednesday during the month, a new topic was examined to help families achieve personal and financial goals.

The workshop series began with a look at the variety of public benefit programs available to low income individuals and families. The workshop, It's Yours, Use It!, featured Employment Specialist Michelle Flannery from the Brashear Neighborhood Employment Center, the Food Stamp Outreach Coordinator, Meghan Coughlin from the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, and representatives from the Consumer Health Coalition and the Social Security Administration.

The second workshop examined a new federal initiative to allow individuals on SSI and SSD disability insurance to re-enter the workforce. Ticket to Work: Opportunities for Individuals with Disabilities provided in-depth information on this important new direction. Joy Smith, a representative from AHEDD, offered personalized assistance to all participants.

Brashear Case Managers Rebecca Comer and Tara Olexa provided the instruction for the next two workshops on financial literacy topics. Using materials provided by Consumer Action's MoneyWi$e program, Comer and Olexa presented Make Your Money Count: Money Management and Basic Banking and Take Charge of Your Future: Building and Repairing Credit.

The workshop series is a part of Brashear's Self-Sufficiency Program. This program is funded by the Birmingham Foundation and Pittsburgh Community Services, Incorporated with additional assistance through Brashear's NAP Partnership with PNC Bank and South Side Local Development Company.
