County plans ‘Salute to Star-Spangled Families' for Memorial Day

Plans have been made for a Memorial Day tribute to southwestern Pennsylvania families whose loved ones are serving in the armed services, according to Allegheny County Chief Executive Jim Roddey.

A Salute to Our Star-Spangled Families will be held on Memorial Day, Monday, May 26 from 3-5 p.m. at Soldiers and Sailors National Military Museum and Memorial in Oakland. The event is designed to recognize the sacrifices being made by military families in our community, especially those with loved ones overseas.

“I have seen the great sacrifice these local heroes – both the soldiers and their families – are making, and the powerful commitment they have made to our country,” said Roddey. “This event will ensure that local military families know that United We Stand, Divided We Fall are not empty words, but words to which we subscribe.”

A Salute to Our Star-Spangled Families will begin with a program inside Soldiers and Sailors Hall featuring patriotic music and service anthems performed by the River City Brass Band, a Blue Star Flag distribution to each military family in attendance and speeches by military personnel representing the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard. Following the formal program, attendees will move to the lawn for music by the Shaler Jazz Ensemble, refreshments and food with an all-American theme. The event will offer military families the opportunity to bond with bellow families in a relaxed atmosphere.

Military family members may request free tickets for the program by mail, phone, fax or e-mail. Requests should include the requester's name, complete mailing address, the number of tickets desired and the name and unit of the family member serving in the military.
