County mibsters advance to semifinals at national marbles tournament

 


Five of Allegheny County’s marbles players have advanced to the semifinals of the 94th National Marbles Tournament in Wildwood, New Jersey.

In the girls division, 13-year-old Lauren Shutey of the South Side Flats, 12-year-old Sierra Ricci of Shaler Twp., and 13-year-old Madison Johnson of Lawrenceville have advanced. In the boys division, 14-year-old Eli Murphy of Squirrel Hill and 9-year-old Gavin Held of Moon Twp. will compete in the semifinals. The national semifinals will take place this evening.

The top two finishers in each division will play for the national title on the morning of Thursday, June 22.

Eli Murphy is in 1st place with an overall record of 46-4, and Gavin Held is in 8th with a record of 26-24 in the boys division. In the girls division, Lauren Shutey is in 1st with an overall record of 52-2, Sierra Ricci is in 2nd with a record of 44-10, and Madison Johnson is 6th with a record of 38-16.

The “mibsters,” or marble shooters, will play more than 1,200 games during the four-day tournament to compete for national honors, college scholarships and numerous prizes and awards.
