Lauren Shutey is county marbles champ

 


The Allegheny County Parks Department has announced the winners of the 2017 County Marbles Tournament, which took place June 1-3 in the Courthouse Courtyard.

In the girl’s division, 13-year-old Lauren Shutey of South Side Flats was crowned champion, and 12-year-old Sierra Ricci of Shaler Twp. was the runner-up. In the boy’s division, 14-year-old Eli Murphy of Squirrel Hill took the championship, and 9-year-old Gavin Held of Moon Twp. was the runner-up.

Allegheny County’s winners and runners-up will compete in the 94th Annual National Marbles Championship June 19-23 in Wildwood, N.J.

Allegheny County’s marbles program has produced 30 national champions since the tournament started in 1922, including 11 in the last 13 years: Haley Grenesko in 2016; Emily Cavacini in 2013; Bailey Narr and Brandon Matchett in 2011; Penelope Bauer in 2010; Amber Ricci and John Leffakis in 2008; Alexandra Bauer in 2007; Keith Moss in 2006; Jamie Miller in 2005; and Carly Miller in 2004.
