Under the leadership of the Soup Contest Committee, The Brashear Association and the South Side Chamber of Commerce teamed up again to produce another successful South Side Soup Contest on Saturday, Feb. 18.

As with last year's contest, the South Side was rewarded with a warm and sunny day for the dedicated work of more than 1300 soup contest "taster judges" to find the best soups of the year in the neighborhood.

Contest check-in locations were at WYEP/WESA Studios at Bedford Square on one end of East Carson Street and at South Side Cinema at South Side Works on the other. Ticket holders picked up their soup stop maps and punch cards for the contest and set out to locate the 24 soup stops.

The sidewalks were definitely buzzing with soup tasters on a mission to find the best soup. They sampled soups from noon to 3 p.m. before submitting their votes in each award category by 3:30 p.m.

Soup contest winners were announced immedately, and the coveted 2017 soup contest awards were delivered to the winners:

People's Choice Best Overall Soup -- Spicy Cauliflower Broccoli Beer Cheese by the Smiling Moose and hosted at First National Bank.

Best Soup (Runner Up) -- Roasted Cauliflower with Dates and Hazelnuts by Stagioni and hosted at Buddy's Brews on Carson.

Best Vegetarian Soup -- Corn Truffle by Tres Rios and hosted at Fudge Farm.

Most Unique Soup -- Let's Make a Dill OTB Bicycle Café and hosted at Thomas Shannon Barry Law Office.

Best Host -- Victory Pointe.

First National Bank-South Side was the soup contest presenting sponsor and a soup tasting stop again this year.

The Brashear Association and South Side Welcome Center operations will be supported with the net proceeds. The event video will be posted at http://www.southsidesoup.com when it has been completed.
