Two guns recovered in arrests on January 1 on the South Side Flats

On January 1 Zone 3 Officers were sent to the area of 1820 E. Carson Street for a report of shots fired at approximately 8 p.m.

Officers were advised a bearded black man, approximately 6’ tall and wearing black pants and a black sweatshirt, was seen jumping the fence at the rear of the Burger King parking lot. He had a gun and ran up Carey Way toward S. 19th Street. Additional information came in that there were two men together.

Responding officers located two vehicles with bullet holes parked side by side in the Burger King parking lot. Additionally, two men in dark clothing were observed walking up S. 22nd Street near Mary Street.

One of the two men, later identified as 25-year-old Jeremiah Yates of Rankin, matched the description and appeared to be concealing a firearm. With Yates was 19-year-old Levar Chapman of St. Clair. He was also 6’ tall and was wearing a hooded, dark green coat, dark green pants, and black boots. He also had a beard.

Police detained both men. Chapman was found with a 44 special in his right front jacket pocket that had been reported stolen and a large sum of cash in his left pant packet. A black ski mask was recovered from the front pocket of his hooded sweatshirt.

Another firearm was located under one of the vehicles in the parking lot.

Chapman faces charges including firearms not to be carried without a license, receiving stolen property, and discharging a firearm. Yates had outstanding warrants from the Allegheny County Sherriff’s Office. The investigation remains open.
