Market House lists Oct. activities

 


The South Side Market House Healthy Active Living Center on 12th Street has a full month of activities lined up for October.

Every Monday in October Carnegie Library will be offering a “How to use a Small Computer /Tablet” class from 10-11 a.m. at the center.

Every Tuesday and Thursday the center will be offering a Pickleball session at the Ormbsy Recreation Center, 79 S. 22nd Street, from 9 a.m.-noon. Seniors are welcome to join in and enjoy a fun game without too much stress on their body.

A Dinner and Discussion Series takes place every Thursday from 6-7 p.m. This will focus on people that are thinking about retirement. This series is for any age and is free of charge.

Topics include: Oct. 6, Options for Downsizing Your Home with Morgan Roberts from LifeSpan; Oct. 13, Community CPR/AED with Mark Pinchalk, City of Pittsburgh EMS; Oct. 20, Navigating the Healthcare/Medicare System with Ebony Taylor, an independent licensed insurance broker; and, Oct. 27, Preparing for and Living in a Retirement Facility with Eric Persun with the New York Life Insurance Co.

The CCAC classes offered at the Market House Center this month include the Chair Exercise Class every Tuesday from 10-11:30 a.m. and Line Dancing every Wednesday from 12:30-2 p.m. These classes are free and available to any members 60 years and older.

The Lunch and Learn Series continues every Wednesday from 12-1 p.m. Topics for the month include: Oct. 5, History of Pittsburgh from 1800-1850; Oct. 12, Legendary Women of Pittsburgh; Oct. 19, Pittsburgh Inventors and Inventions; and, Oct. 26, Pittsburgh Architecture.

An Oktoberfest is planned for Oct. 14 from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. or until the food runs out. This event includes homemade pierogies, haluski, hot sausage, bingo, a rummage sale and bake sale. Volunteers are needed to work on the Friday of the event and donations of gently used items are needed for the rummage sale.

There will also be an Art Show Opening on the same day. South Side Market House Senior Center members are welcome to drop off their artwork at the center from 9-11 a.m. or 1-6 p.m. for the show. Only one piece of art will be accepted per person.

An opening reception will take place on Oct. 14 at the center from 5-6 p.m. For more information, call Sarah at 412-488-8404.

A Halloween Celebration and October Birthday Party will take place on October 18 with a friendly darts and Wii Bowling competition with prizes and a costume contest from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

Center members will be going to Princess Lanes to bowl from 12:30-3 p.m. on Oct. 26.

There will be a Halloween Party with breakfast, bingo, lunch, a costume contest, Pumpkin Race, Halloween Prize Auction, and treat bags for $5 a person from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 27. RSVPs are due by Oct. 21 by calling 412-488-8404.

The center has also started a new loyalty program. For every underlined activity on the calendar a member participates in, they receive a punch on their loyalty card. After ten punches they will get their choice of a free prize. Members can get more information and pick up their loyalty card in the center’s office.
