Allentown couple raising money to create Warrington Avenue parklet
Jolie and Bobby Valentine talk about their Allentown parklet project at the recent Next 3 Days event in Grandview Park. The Valentines have created a GoFundMe campaign to help make the Warrington Avenue project a success.
Allentown residents Jolie and Bobby Valentine are raising money to build a public parklet in the empty lot next to Paisano's Pizza at 819 E. Warrington Avenue, incorporating both greenspace and art to have a beautiful environment for community members to gather.
The idea to beautify the lot came from the couple's love for their community, where they recently moved, and their volunteer work with the Brashear Association's after-school program at the Allentown Learning and Engagement Center (ALEC). The Valentines are donating their time and talent to give back to the neighborhood by creating a beautiful space for community members to gather and enjoy the outdoors. Mark Trapolsi, owner of the lot, and the adjacent neighborhood staple, Paisano's Pizza, will be chipping in on the project and is allowing the re-design on his lot in the Warrington Avenue corridor.
To cover materials for the project the Valentines launched a GoFundMe fundraising campaign. Their initial goal of $5,000 will cover the costs to clean and level the lot and to begin to build out the space.
To date, the project has raised more than $2,000 with an additional match from the Hilltop Alliance of $1,000. All funds raised are tax deductible and information on how to donate can be found on their GoFund me page https://www.gofundme.com/allentownparklet.
Those who can't donate right now, but want to get involved will have an opportunity in the future. The Valentines plan on presenting their plans at an upcoming community meeting early this fall to discuss the layout and structures that will go inside the lot and to hear from neighbors. Additionally, volunteer opportunities will be posted as the project moves forward.
