The Lion concludes City Theatre season

City Theatre concludes its 41st season with the hit one-man musical, The Lion, written and performed by Benjamin Scheuer, on the Main Stage, May 14 – June 5.

The production, directed by Sean Daniels, was named one of the “Top Ten Theatre Performances of 2015” by The Huffington Post, NBC New York, and Manhattan Digest. Currently on tour, The Lion arrives at City Theatre following successful—and sold out—stops in Washington D.C ., New Haven, CT, Rochester, N.Y ., and Portland, OR. Its original off-Broadway production at the Manhattan Theatre Club earned Mr. Scheuer a 2015 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Solo Performance and a 2015 Theatre World Award, among other nominations.

The Lion is a mesmerizing musical memoir that candidly illustrates one man’s journey to find his inner roar. Through song and story, it follows musical sensation Benjamin Scheuer as he discovers that scars can fade into gifts, and that a family’s love spans not only decades, but continents. This poignant coming-of-age tale gives an authentic look at the redemptive power of music.

“The Lion is a very special evening of theatre created by an exceptional talent,” said City Theatre Artistic Director Tracy Brigden. “Ben›s music is catchy, original, funny, and heartbreaking. It moves you in your seat and you will leave the theatre wanting to buy the soundtrack. Ben tells his compelling, insightful, and often hilarious story with great skill and charm. Everyone can relate to this beautifully told tale of family, growing up, and finding your voice.”

Mr. Scheuer is the recipient of the 2015 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Solo Performance and a 2015 Theatre World Award. The animated music videos for his songs “Weather The Storm, “The Lion,” and “Cookie-tin Banjo” have won prizes at the Annecy Film Festival, British Animation Awards, Encounters Film Festival, Crystal Palace Festival, and Buenos Aires’ ExpoToons Film Festival.

The album Songs from The Lion will be released on June 3 (Warner/ADA). With photographer Riya Lerner, Mr. Scheuer is co-creator of the art book “Between Two Spaces,” from which 50 percent of proceeds go to the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society.

He has toured with Mary Chapin Carpenter and performed at venues including Royal Albert Hall in London and Lincoln Center Theater in New York. He has been a writer-in-residence at Goodspeed, Weston Playhouse, and the Johnny Mercer Songwriting Workshop, and been commissioned by Williamstown Theatre Festival. Benjamin lives in New York City. The Lion is on tour through February 2017.

City Theatre is hosting an event with select community partners to kick off the run. The Roar: An Evening with The Lion takes place May 12 and includes a happy hour from 6-7 p.m. in the Gordon Lounge, a special preview performance of The Lion on the Main Stage, and a live recording of the podcast, Marta on the Move, featuring interviews with City Theatre staff and performer Mr. Scheuer, following the performance.

Tickets to The Roar are $25 and open for public sale on April 25.

Tickets are available at the City Theatre Box Office, 1300 Bingham Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15203 or by calling 412.431.CITY (2489). For more information, visit citytheatrecompany.org.
