South Pittsburgh Reporter - Serving South Pittsburgh Since 1939

A True Pioneer

Paging through last week’s South Pittsburgh Reporter I was so delighted to read Ms. Szweda Jordan’s retrospective piece on the life and accomplishments of Roberta Smith (Editor reflects on life, community, May 26, 2015).

As South Pittsburgh residents, I think it is important to recognize the leaders that helped to shape our community. No conversation about our shared history and accomplishments south of the “Mon” could be complete without paying homage to this wonderful journalist and community leader.

As everyone who reads this paper knows, the South Pittsburgh Reporter is the pulse of our neighborhoods. As important as this institution is to the legacy of Roberta Smith, we learned last week it is only one of her many accomplishments.

As a business leader and university graduate in a time when women were not afforded equal opportunities in the professional realm Roberta served as a true pioneer for equality.

Finally I want to echo Judge Ricciardi’s thoughtful praise: “we really consider her to be an icon south of the rivers.” Thank you Roberta Smith for your dedication and service to our community.
