Lanes shifted at Rt. 51 Overbrook jug handle

PennDOT has shifted traffic on northbound Route 51 (Saw Mill Run Boulevard) onto the newly constructed jug handle.

Two lanes of traffic will be maintained on northbound Route 51 during peak travel hours. Motorists can access Route 88 or continue northbound onto mainline Route 51 from the jug handle.

Southbound traffic will remain in the current configuration as crews begin work on five bridges on the existing alignment of Route 51. Southbound traffic will remain in two lanes during this construction phase.

The work is part of the $18.99 million Route 51/88 project which includes the replacement of five bridges, construction of a new bridge, turning lane construction, roadway reconstruction, signal upgrades, lighting, sidewalk and drainage improvements, CCTV cameras, utility relocation and stream bank restoration. Four lanes of traffic on Route 51 will be maintained during peak travel times during the project. Approximately, 42,000 vehicles use Route 51 on an average day.
