Neighborhood groups can apply for city's Love Your Block grant award
Applications are available for the city’s Fall 2014 Love Your Block grant award program.
The block revitalization program gives organizations up to $1,000 in funds and donated supplies for a neighborhood block improvement project that mobilizes community volunteers. Projects will be implemented from September 15 to November 15. Applications are available online at http://www.pittsburghpa.gov/servepgh/loveyourblock.
Along with the mini-grant, selected groups will also receive support from city departments through services such as trash collection and graffiti removal to support their projects, as feasible. A full list of available city services can be found in the Love Your Block application at http://www.pittsburghpa.gov/servepgh/forms/loveyourblock/grantapplication?m=apply.
Applicants for the fall 2014 program must be a qualified nonprofit organization or have the support of a nonprofit fiscal agent, and the impacted area must be within city limits. Applications must be received no later than 5 p.m. on July 11, 2014; late applications will not be accepted.
Applicants will be notified of their status by August 2014. A mandatory grantee orientation will take place in late August 2014.
In addition to receiving up to $1,000 in funds and donated supplies, all qualifying groups are eligible for an additional award. The best block revitalization project will receive an additional $2,000 for future block enhancements based upon judgment criteria listed in the application details.
To date, grantees have impacted approximately 296 blocks by collecting 28,137 pounds of litter, creating 204 green spaces, leveraging almost $184,000 in donations and recruiting around 3,615 volunteers through the program.
Love Your Block is supported by Peoples Gas, PNC and The Home Depot Foundation & East Liberty Branch. In addition, this program is supported by the Corporation for National Community Service, the AmeriCorps VISTA program and is based on the Cities of Service Blueprint of the same name.
