Local actress, Kendra McLaughlin, to perform one woman show
Local media consultant, producer and actress Kendra McLaughlin announced she will perform her own, original, one woman play You Can't Have An Orgasm With Me at the Greybox Theatre, in Lawrenceville, Mother's Day weekend.
Ms. McLaughlin received an Artist Opportunity Grant through the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council in November, 2013. GPAC Grants are awarded three times a year to help fund important professional development opportunities for artists.
"It is a provocative, hilarious, touching look at three different women who each visit their therapist on a typical Tuesday evening," she said. The concept was born out of several years' experience working as a child and adult therapist, consulting with people in various stages of recovery, especially women who had suffered emotional trauma.
"The therapeutic process taught me that breakdowns can be breakthroughs if we accept and forgive ourselves for being human," she said. Their stories affected Ms. McLaughlin who felt they could be creatively translated into universal truths about vulnerability.
"Plus, the word 'orgasm' is in the title, so everyone can't help but have some adult fun at the theater," said Ms. McLaughlin.
In addition to her work as a therapist, Ms. McLaughlin has acted locally in several theater productions, film and TV pilots. In September 2011, she started Playground Productions, LLC, a full-service, independent production company whose creative goal is to tell stories of significance that inspire, provoke emotion and reflection, and incite action.
Ms McLaughlin named her company after an experience she had working with Russell Crowe on the set of "The Next Three Days."
"He actually filmed a scene at a playground on my street! What are the odds?" she said. "A few days later, I got the call to work closely with him as a stand-in. It was a professional dream come true!"
Her company name reminds her that anything is possible if you believe in your dreams.
"You Can't Have An Orgasm With Me" will be performed at the Greybox Theatre, 3595 Butler Street in Lawrenceville Friday May 9 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, May 10 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tickets are $15; $10 for students and seniors.
