Pitt Band helps Carrick food bank
Janet Whetsell, coordinator for the Zion Christian Church Food Bank, gives a quick tour of the operation to Sharon Alberts from the Carrick Community Council and Maria Munsch and Emma Hayes from the Pitt Band. For the past several years, the Pitt Band has given a generous donation to help the food bank's operations.
Zion Christian Church Food Bank was the beneficiary of a donation from the Pitt Band for the second time in the last two years.
Maria Munsch and Emma Hayes, members of the Service Committee of Tau Beta Sigma and the Pitt Band stopped by the food bank last week to present a check to Janet Whetsell, food bank coordinator.
Each year the Pitt Band raises money through the proceeds from a Thanksgiving Dinner. Last year and this year, the band members voted to give those proceeds to the Carrick food bank.
Ms. Whetsell said the Carrick food pantry was thankful for the donation, noting the number of families served has jumped from just 60 two years ago to 245 now. The total number of people served by the food bank each month is estimated to be more than 900.
Open on the third Saturday of each month, Ms. Whetsell says they draw families from surrounding Hilltop neighborhoods in addition to Carrick.
The day before the once a month food distribution, about 40 volunteers meet at the church to prepare for the following morning. Distribution day requires the help of 25 volunteers.
The food bank is supported by the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, but also depends on donations from the local community. Donations may be sent to: Zion Christian Church, 2019 Brownsville Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15210 and write "Carrick Food Bank" on the check memo line.
