S.S. church celebrates opening of gym

South Side Presbyterian Church will celebrate the reopening of its gym after renovating the floor.

The South Side Presbyterian Church and Community Center is welcoming all to its Gym Reopening Celebration on Sunday, Dec. 15, at 12:15 - 1:30 p.m. for refreshments in the social hall and fun in the gym.

Everyone is also welcome to the worship service at 11 am, in which there will be a Prayer of Rededication for the gym. The whole neighborhood is invited.

"We are blessed that the major repairs of the gym roof, its support system, and ceiling were completed November 16," Pastor Kathy Hamilton-Vargo said. "We also want to thank all who have donated to help cover our costs. Numbers of people from the South Side community were kind and generous with donations.

Before reopening the gym, the South Side Presbyterian Church had to first repair the roof.

"We are getting close to our fundraising goal, and donations are still welcome. And, most of all, thanks to God who kept the whole thing successful, gave us strength and direction, and saved our gym for community use!"

The church also had the gym floor refinished back in late May and expressed gratitude to the Birmingham Foundation for their very helpful microgrant. A proper celebration was delayed because of the roof problem.

The church and community center are at South 20th and Sarah streets on South Side. While the sanctuary and social hall are handicap accessible, there are three steps required to get into the gym. Those who can't make it up the steps can at least take a look from the gym doorway.
