Allentown seniors say thanks to road crew

Warrington Avenue constructions workers pose with signs of “Thanks” made by Allentown Senior Center Participants.

Allentown Senior Center participants came together to make signs of “Thanks” for the workers who have been reconstructing Allentown’s trolley-tracked main thoroughfare since October of 2012.

Construction workers commented they had never before had thank you signs made for them.

As the signs were being made, many stories were told of the kind and considerate workers.

“They watched for me, they warned me, they crossed me and even escorted me home a few times,” said Edie Twigger, a bind resident who frequents the Allentown Senior Center.

Edna Wise chimed in, “They helped us to cross the street and even carried my crochet bags. Who does that?”

“With a smile on their face,” Tulsa Harris added, “they completed our road.”

“The supervisors, inspectors, foremen and laborers kept us informed at every step along the way. Because of their assistance, our center remained open and accessible to all participants throughout the long construction process. They couldn’t have been nicer,” explained Cyndie Carioli, Allentown Senior Center director.

Center seniors remarked this group of workers started out as strangers and ended up as friends.

The signs will be prominently displayed at the celebration of the reopening of Warrington Avenue being held at the Allentown Senior Center, 631 E. Warrington Avenue, on Tuesday evening, Sept. 24, beginning at 6 p.m. In addition to free refreshments and live music sponsored by the Allentown Community Development Corporation, the center will be fundraising by selling Sarris chocolate-covered pretzels, new puzzles, plants, and tickets for their Chinese Auction (including Pirates Memorabilia).

Hilltop United Methodist Church will also be holding a flea market and will be selling home-made soups and baked goods. For more information, call 412-481-5484.
