Hometown-Homegrown food expo at the John Heinz History Center

The Senator John Heinz History Center will celebrate the region’s passion for food at the second annual Hometown–Homegrown, a fun and flavorful food expo presented in partnership with GoodTaste! Pittsburgh next Sat., Sept. 7 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Visitors can sample an assortment of foods from nearly 30 local vendors representing the best of the ‘Burgh’s neighborhoods and swap recipes with the region’s culinary experts. Featured vendors for this second annual event include Pittsburgh staples such as the Original Oyster House, the 142-year-old Market Square seafood landmark, and Uncle Charley’s Sausage, a nationally recognized business that has served the region since 1988.

Last year, Hometown–Homegrown attracted nearly 1,500 visitors to the History Center.

At this year’s event, visitors can try pierogies from six different Pittsburgh-based vendors and then vote for “Pittsburgh’s Perfect Pierogi.”

Throughout the day, the History Center’s Weisbrod Kitchen Classroom will host special cooking demonstrations with WQED’s Rick Sebak and Chris Fennimore along with presentations from local culinary experts representing Marty’s Market, Braddock’s American Brasserie, and more.

Hometown–Homegrown will include activities throughout five floors of the History Center, including a special presentation on the history of Pittsburgh spirits by Wigle Whiskey, live entertainment, fitness activities in the SmartSteps exhibition, and much more.

The History Center is asking visitors to submit their favorite family pierogi recipes as part of the Hometown–Homegrown “Pittsburgh’s Perfect Pierogi Facebook Contest.”

To enter, visitors are encouraged to post their best pierogi recipes, images, and stories on the History Center’s Facebook wall or send via e-mail to news@heinzhistorycenter.org.

The contest winner, who will be selected at random on Wed., Sept. 4, will win a $50 gift certificate to Braddock’s American Brasserie, a behind-the-scenes tour of the QED Cooks studio with host Chris Fennimore, and will have their recipe featured on the QED Cooks website. The winner will also receive two free admission passes to the Hometown–Homegrown event at the History Center.

All Hometown–Homegrown activities and food samples are free for History Center members and included with regular admission for non-members: $15 for adults, $13 for seniors age 62+, $6 for students and children age 6-17, and free for children age 5 and under.
