Annual 'Garden in the Parks' day on Saturday, Aug. 17
Penn State Master Gardeners of Allegheny County are hosting an open house at their demonstration gardens at North Park and South Park on Saturday, Aug.17 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“Garden in the Parks Field Day is a great opportunity to meet other gardeners, get tips on improving home gardens, and enjoy a day of fun at one of our beautiful Allegheny County Parks,” explains Philip Bauerle, the interim Penn State master gardener coordinator in Pittsburgh. “The event has grown every year since we started it about five year ago, with 1,000 people participating last year.”
A crew of about 30 Penn State master gardeners will be on site at each location to give garden tours, provide information about bees, advice on composting, and offer brochures and pamphlets to help gardeners. Plus, two representatives from the Penn State Gardenline Hotline will be at both parks to answer gardening questions. Two baskets of gardening tools—one at each site—will be raffled.
Kids will enjoy games, digging up a potato to take home, and sampling lavender shortbread cookies. Garlic from the demonstration gardens, and tomatoes from the home gardens of master gardeners will be available to taste, also. Garlic will be available for sale, as will soil test kits.
Tours of the half-moon garden in North Park will be part of the activity. The half-moon garden is planted and maintained by the Penn State master gardeners, with a new theme every year. In 2011, the theme was the rainbow color spectrum; last year it was hot and bright colors. This year’s theme is black and white, achieved through flowers and foliage such as the black leaves from the sweet potato vine complemented by white flowers such as cleome.
The Penn State Master Gardener Demonstration Garden at North Park is at the intersection of Wildwood Road and Ingomar Road; at South Park, the garden is at the intersection of Corrigan Drive and McConkey Road.
