Homeless Veterans and their families can receive free food, vision and dental care, haircuts and showers, and other goods and services during Veteran Leadership Program of Western Pennsylvania’s Sixth Annual Stand Down 2013, on Saturday, Aug. 10 from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m., rain or shine, at Shepherd’s Heart Fellowship, 13 Pride Street, Pittsburgh PA 15219. Stand Down is a military term, which refers to fresh military troops taking care of exhausted combat troops by moving them from the battlefield to an environment that is safe and secure. The depleted combat soldiers are then given medical attention, food, fresh clothing and an opportunity to clean up, rest and recuperate.
Services that will be provided at Stand Down 2013 include: housing assistance, food, medical care, eye exams and glasses, dental care, job search support, showers, social services, legal assistance, haircuts, foot care, and Veteran benefits. There will also be an area where veterans and families can rest and relax.
This year, free transportation will be provided to/from the event for veterans and their families. Locations include: Mechling Shakley Veterans Center/268 Center; Alle-Kiski Area Hope Center, Inc.; City Mission (Washington County); East End Cooperative Ministry; Familylinks; First Step Recovery Homes, Inc.; Intersection; Jubilee Soup Kitchen; Light of Life Rescue Mission; NCM’s Pleasant Valley Emergency Shelter; Rainbow Kitchen; Wood Street Commons; VA Pittsburgh Domiciliary; VA Butler Domiciliary; Veterans Place, YMCA Hill District; and YMCA North Side.
