State Rep. Jake Wheatley, D-Allegheny, will host a Health and Wellness Weekend Sept. 13-15, with an array of interactive events designed to increase health awareness and motivate participants to live an active, sustainable and healthier lifestyle.
“I urge everyone to save the dates for these events. While the coverage and improvements provided under the Affordable Care Act will help many people to live healthier lives, there are also many things most of us can and should do for ourselves, too,” Rep. Wheatley said.
On Friday night, Sept. 13, Mr. Wheatley and other participating organizations will host an opening reception at the Thelma Lovette YMCA with Dr. Jeannette South-Paul from UPMC.
On Saturday, Sept. 14, there will be the 5K UPHill Walk/Run in the Hill District, culminating with Rep. Wheatley’s annual Community Appreciation Day featuring free food, children’s activities, jobs fair, line dancing extraordinaire DJ Roland Ford, a step exhibition, a spoken-word poetry slam, live local entertainment, free prize giveaways and much more. Community Appreciation Day will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 14 at Kennard Field, off Reed Street between Kirkpatrick and Soho streets in the Hill District.
On Sunday, Sept. 15, the Thelma Lovette YMCA will host a Health Expo offering health screenings, vendors, cooking demonstrations, children obstacle course, equipment and class orientations, a live DJ, a mural painting for families and kids, as well as Health Jeopardy and Food Bingo for children.
