The details leading up to his arrest begin on Tuesday, June 11 when Pittsburgh homicide detectives received a telephone call from a concerned family member who wanted to assist the police in apprehending Jerrell Witlock for his safety and the safety of the officers. The information was turned over to Pittsburgh Police Lt. Kevin Kraus and Lt. Jack Kearney from the Allegheny Sheriff’s Office who alerted the authorities in various states of the attempt to apprehend Mr. Whitlock.
At 11 a.m. on Friday, June 14, in a motel in the 2800 block of NW. 13th Street, Gainesville, FL, joint law enforcement efforts were initiated between the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office and the Western Pennsylvania Fugitive Task Force who developed information Mr. Whitlock and his girlfriend, identified as Precious Gethers, 25. from Pittsburgh were in the hotel.
Police established surveillance for a short time around the target room on the second floor of the motel before approaching. After officers knocked and announced their presence, Mr. Whitlock exited out of a back door of the motel room and attempted to go over the railing when he saw police stationed in the rear of the building.
Mr. Whitlock didn’t comply to verbal commands to get down and was subsequently tased. After being tased he received a small cut on his forehead and was treated on scene by responding para-medics.
Mr. Whitlock and his girlfriend were taken into custody and lodged in the Alachua County Jail. He was arrested by the US Marshals Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force, members of the Gainesville Police Department and the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office.
Mr. Whitlock is charged with aggravated assault, criminal attempted robbery of a motor vehicle and conspiracy: robbery of a motor vehicle. He is also wanted on an Allegheny County Bench Warrant for a probation violation for an underlying firearms offense.
Ms. Gethers was also arrested on a warrant obtained by the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office for endangering the welfare of a child and hindering apprehension. The child, a three year old boy, was in the room at the time of the arrest and turned over to local family members unharmed.
