Working with its partners, Rebuilding Together Pittsburgh, South Side Slopes Neighborhood Association, and Student Conservation Association, Brashear hopes volunteers will join the team to tackle some neighborhood needs.
Rebuilding Together Pittsburgh will coordinate volunteers to work on two homes on the South Side Slopes, owned by residents in need. These homes are among ten that will be renovated during the program year to improve safety, accessibility, comfort, and appearance.
Repairs might include installation of railings or grab bars, replacement of kitchen flooring, installation of windows or cabinets, installation of secure exterior doors, painting, bathroom renovations, or installation of furnaces and appliances. All repairs promote safety and allow residents to age in place. They also help stabilize communities and preserve the housing market for the future.
Volunteers do not need to have training in the building trades although construction skills are appreciated. There are jobs for everyone. All materials, safety equipment, and tools will be provided.
Student Conservation Association brings conservation projects to communities throughout the city and region. They have assembled a crew of teens, all from South Pittsburgh, to take on the challenges of South Side Park.
The crew will work with volunteers on invasive plant removal, clearing brush to open trails, installation of signage, drainage improvement, trail entrance definition, and removal of debris caused by illegal dumping. Again, volunteers do not need specific experience. They should wear jeans and boots and should prepare to get dirty. Personal protective equipment, such as helmets and gloves, will be provided.
Both projects will operate from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 18. Water and lunch will be provided to all volunteers. So organizations can plan equipment and refreshment needs, it is important volunteers register in advance.
