South Hills Chorale spring concert

To close out its 52nd season the South Hills Chorale will perform its spring concert Cantare Primavera (Singing of Spring).

The program will feature a variety of works including George Frederic Handel’s Coronation Anthem No.4, Let Thy Hand be Strengthened, which was composed for the coronation of King George II and Queen Caroline in October, 1727. The program will contain another coronation celebration of sorts. Luici Denza composed the sprightly Funiculi, Funicula to celebrate the opening of the first funicular cable car on Mt. Vesuvius in 1880.

Other pieces will include a medley from the Golden Globe and Oscar award-winning movie Les Misérables, and selections from what many consider to be America’s finest folk opera, Porgy and Bess.

The program, which will be performed at 7:30 p.m. in Upper St. Clair’s Westminster Presbyterian Church on Friday, May 17 and Saturday May 18, also includes other lyrical favorites: Frederick Wetherby’ s Danny Boy, Martin Hamlisch’s What I Did For Love, and Rodgers and Hammerstein’s It’s A Grand Night For Singing.

The Chorale will be directed by Phillip R. Aley and Assistant Director Barbara McAuley. The Chorale’s accompanist, Kathy Whittaker, will be supported by Jonathan Wooding, synthesizer, Pierce Cook, bass, and Tom Early, percussion

While The South Hills Chorale’s 70 singers come from all walks of life, they share one common goal: the love of singing and resilient community spirit. The group has performed at a variety venues including the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.

Local performances have included concerts with the Pittsburgh Youth Philharmonic Orchestra and Pittsburgh Civic Orchestra. In addition, the Chorale has done joint concerts with the Mt. Lebanon High School Percussion Ensemble and the Keystone Oaks Steel Drum Band.

Tickets, $15, are available in advance from the Chorale’s manager, Rick Smith at 412-220-4227 of 412-848-0291. They are also available at the door the evening of the performances.
