Household chemical collection

A household chemical collection event will be held on Saturday, May 4, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m ., at the North Park swimming pool parking lot.

The event provides the public with an opportunity to help create a healthier and cleaner environment by safely and inexpensively disposing of common household chemicals.

A nominal fee of $2 per gallon, cash only, will be charged for collection of the following items: aerosol cans; automotive fluids; batteries; chemistry sets; compact fluorescent light bulbs; gasoline; kerosene; household cleaners; mercury; paint products; pesticides; herbicides; photo chemicals; and pool chemicals.

Items not acceptable for collection include ammunition; appliances, bulk waste; commercial and industrial waste; compressed gas cylinders; drugs; explosives; flares; fluorescent tubes; leaking containers; medical waste; PCBs and dioxin; tires; and radioactive materials (including smoke detectors).

The event is sponsored by Zero Waste Pittsburgh, which is a project of the Pennsylvania Resources Council and several other organizations.
