Stewards needed for Carrick community gardens

The Beautification Committee of Carrick Community Council is seeking a garden steward for one of the four gardens in the neighborhood.

Carrick public gardens include: The Veteran’s Monument at Parkfield Street and Spokane Avenue (Mike Woshner, steward); The Mother’s Statue on Overbrook Boulevard; The Lamar Billboard site on Brownsville Road (Brandon Dilla, steward); and, Concord School (Alaena Grill, steward in conjunction with the Western PA Conservancy).

All four gardens are in highly visible locations that enhance the appearance of the community and generate gardening interest with homeowners. All the gardens are planted and maintained by volunteers.

At this time they have stewards for three of the gardens and are looking for a steward for the Mother’s Statue. The committee noted it is a very small garden that doesn’t require much attention.

Volunteers are also needed to plant and maintain all four gardens. The time commitment is minimal and flexible as follows: One or two planting days (two to four hours each);and, Weekly maintenance, i.e. watering and weeding (one to two hours).

No experience is necessary. Even non-gardeners can learn what to do in about 10 minutes.

To become part of the gardening team and help promote community interest, contact Mike Woshner at 412-884-9299 or on e-mail at
