I know the ‘railroad kids’

I am responding to a letter written by a South Side resident Joseph Forbes (Let the kids alone, Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013).

Clearly, he does not understand what these “railroad kids” are really about. They are not just resting their feet as they pass through the South Side, while traveling the country. They are all homeless, drug addicted kids.

The money they get from panhandling is used to buy their drugs. Sure they feed themselves and their dogs, but they mainly feed their drug habits. I know this because I am a recovering addict and I have dealt with these kids and spent time in jail with them.

I am not knocking these kids or judging them, they are living very hard lives! And I can only hope they all survive.
