Museum of Art to open two interactive projects
Carnegie Museum of Art will launch two projects in February that rely on visitor participation. 20/20: Celebrating Two Decades of the Heinz Architectural Center and Oh Snap! Your Take on Our Photographs will launch with a selection of works from the museum’s collections to encourage responses from visitors.
20/20: Celebrating Two Decades of the Heinz Architectural Center is on display from February 9–May 19 with a birthday party/cake contest launch event: CAKEitecture on February 9.
Celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Heinz Architectural Center and help inform its vision for the future. 20/20 kicks off a year of programming that will engage the public in dialogue about the significance of architecture in their lives. The presentation includes a timeline that highlights important exhibitions, events, and acquisitions of the past 20 years; a display of 20 objects from the collection selected by current or past curatorial staff because of their personal resonance; and a video presentation of individuals from outside the museum reflecting on experiences in their lives that were profoundly affected by architecture.
Visitors will be invited to reflect on their own experiences with architecture and design, and their responses will join an online forum that will help shape the Heinz Architectural Center’s next 20 years.
“20/20 will bring together the institution’s history, curators, and the visitors themselves to share ideas and everyday experiences with the built environment,” said curator of architecture Tracy Myers. “These responses will give the center insight into new and different ways to discuss architecture and design.”
The special launch event CAKEitecture will take place on February 9, from 7–9 p.m. in the Hall of Sculpture, Carnegie Museum of Art
CAKEitecture pairs architects and designers with local bakeries to craft architecturally designed confections. Come to vote for a favorite, admire the sight, and have a taste—they are all edible.
The Teams include: The Design Alliance and Gluuteny; Loysen + Kreuthmeier and Prantl’s Bakery; Springboard Design and Sugar ’N Spires; Perkins Eastman and Madison Ave Cakes; and, Young Architects Forum and Dozen Bake Shop
Oh Snap! Your Take on Our Photographs opens February 21 in the Forum Gallery
The museum’s photography collection is constantly growing, come in to see some of the new acquisitions. Visitors may take their own photos in response and share them. They will be printing images in the gallery and adding new user-submitted photos to the walls as the project evolves.
Museum staff hope this experimental approach will spur conversation, reaction, and interaction, as well as demonstrate that art on museum walls is not hermetically sealed from new ways of thinking.
“We’re looking forward to seeing how audiences help round out Oh Snap!,” said Marilyn Russell, the museum’s curator of education. “It will be a fantastic avenue for encouraging more than just the viewing of our artworks—we hope to provoke real conversations that will be shared in the galleries.”
