Mayor Luke Ravenstahl has put out a citywide call for Snow Angels – volunteers who provide snow removal for senior or physically disabled residents – and encouraged neighbors-in-need to apply for assistance.
The Snow Angels program, a servePGH initiative, matches able-bodied volunteers with senior and physically disabled residents in their own neighborhood to remove snow from their sidewalks and walkways. Launched last winter, Snow Angels volunteers removed over 27,000 square feet of snow during its inaugural season.
Residents may sign up to volunteer or apply for assistance at pittsburghpa.gov/snowangels.
“As snow moves into the forecast, it’s time to call on Pittsburgh’s culture of neighbors helping neighbors,” Mayor Ravenstahl said. “Last year, the Snow Angels program was very successful, minimizing the hardship of snow removal for almost 200 seniors and residents in need. It’s important that residents stay safe and are looked after by loved ones all year round, but especially during the difficult winter months.”
Individual residents, community groups, schools and organizations are encouraged to apply to be Snow Angels. To receive assistance from a Snow Angel, City residents must be age 60 or older, or have a physical disability and lack snow removal resources. Volunteers have 24 hours after the snow stops falling to remove the snow, if not expected to melt within 24 hours.
In winter 2011, the mayor’s call for Snow Angels volunteers and recipients was met with overwhelming enthusiasm. During the initial launch, 187 senior and disabled residents-in-need were matched with 81 individual and group volunteers throughout the city. Many volunteers took on multiple houses to ensure needy residents received help. In just one winter season, Snow Angels volunteers removed over 27,000 square feet of snow.
