On Monday, Nov. 19 Councilman William Peduto introduced legislation suspending on-street parking meter enforcement for one day on Saturday, Nov. 24 in honor of Small Business Saturday.
Small Business Saturday is a nationwide campaign to raise awareness of the importance of small retailers and to increase sales at small, independently owned businesses in our neighborhoods. Economic analyses show that small retailers make between 10 and 20 percent of their entire annual profits during the holiday season, so increasing sales during this time has an impact on their bottom line throughout the year.
“Our neighborhood retailers are a big part of what makes Pittsburgh a great City,” said Councilman Peduto. “Offering free parking to customers on one day, during the busiest shopping season of the year, is a way for Pittsburgh City Council to say ‘thank you’ to the store owners, employees, and customers who keep our neighborhoods vibrant and are helping our city grow.”
