Mulch Madness events coming to South Side and Carrick

Volunteers are needed for Mulch Madness events in Carrick and on the South Side Trail in October.

At Mulch Madness events, volunteers will work together to weed and mulch over 1,000 trees in seven neighborhoods. Tree Pittsburgh provides staff, tools, safety vests, gloves, and refreshments for each event.

The South Side Trail Mulch Madness is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 14 from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers will be weeding and mulching trees along the South Side Trail (follow 9th Street to Three Rivers Heritage Trail).

All events are rain or shine (unless heavy rain or thunder/lightning occur) Tools and safety materials will be provided by Tree Pittsburgh. Registration is required at

Parents and/or guardians may register to volunteer with their children for this event only. There are limited spaces available for children to volunteer at this event. Children must be between the ages of 5-12. Parent/guardian must remain present during the event.

Tree Pittsburgh will provide youth sized gloves and tools! To register a child for the event parents or guardians should register themselves, and contact: for additional details.

Carrick's Mulch Maddness event is on October 20 from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers will meet at 1119 Brownsville Road in Carrick. Last year they had more than 100 volunteers from all over Pittsburgh helping the Carrick Tree Tenders mulch our trees on Brownsville Rd. Register is required at

Volunteers for both events should arrive ready to work. Wear long pants, closed-toed shoes, and dress in layers for the weather.

Additionally, on October 27 Carrick will receive it's last tree planting from Tree Vitalize. They will plant 11 new trees at Phillips Park. More information will be available closer to the plant date.
