Wheatley named to House Committee on Property Taxes

August 21, 2012

State Rep. Jake Wheatley has been appointed by House Minority Leader Frank Dermody to serve on the House Select Committee on Property Taxes.

"The need for fair and adequate school funding and the level of property taxes have been major issues in Pittsburgh for many years, and I hope this committee can help us reach answers. Children's education should not depend on their zip code. I am pleased to participate in this select committee and look forward to discussing how to address these problems," Rep. Wheatley said.

The Select Committee on Property Taxes was established in June with House adoption of H.R. 774, which calls for the committee to investigate, review and make recommendations regarding the relationship between school district and local government tax levels and funding levels received from federal and state programs.

The committee consists of 13 members selected from the House Education, Finance, Urban Affairs, Local Government, Environmental Resources and Energy, and Transportation committees and appointed by the House majority and minority leaders, with one at-large member appointed by the majority leader.

The committee will hold its first meeting later this month. Under H.R. 774, the committee must report its findings and recommendations to the House by Nov. 30.
