Sabers sign ups on July weekends
South Side Sabers Youth Football Organization sign-ups are every weekend in July from 1-3 p.m. at Quarry Field.
Football and Cheer camps will be held during practice season.
The Sabers will be purchasing new equipment for the football players and uniforms for the cheerleaders. They feel the purchase of new helmets is important due to recent media coverage on the lifetime risks associated with concussions.
The Sabers will be handing out information on concussion awareness and hope to have support from community partners to give information to the entire organization, coaches, players and parents on how to identify, prevent and treat concussions. The Sabers are also promoting responsible sports by having players, cheer leaders, coaches, and parents sign-up with Liberty Mutual's Responsible Sports program which
offers parents and coaches weekly tips for positive coaching and parenting of young athletes. This will help the Sabers qualify next year for a possible $2,500 grant.
The Sabers serve youth in: South Side, Arlington, Mt. Oliver, Mt. Washington, Carrick and Knoxville. This organization includes youths from varied cultures, religions, and economical backgrounds. Through participation in SSSYFO youth are taught respect, sportsmanship, discipline, and have the opportunity for personal and social growth.
Although located within Pittsburgh city limits, the Sabers are compete against suburban teams as a member of the South Suburban Youth Football League (SSYFL). The SSYFL includes other area teams, such as: Baldwin, Brentwood, West Mifflin, Thomas Jefferson, Montour, Brookline, Carlynton, and North Hills.
This organization consists of six football teams, and five division cheer squads. Approximately 250 - 300 children ages 6 through 14 participate each season, which starts the first day of August and runs through the second week of December. The all-volunteer staff consists of a board of directors, athletic directors, football and cheer coaches, student coaches and cheer trainers.
Coaching and training staff includes semi-professional, college or high school football players and cheerleaders.
The Sabers rely on registration fees, fundraisers, donations, and sponsorship to maintain financial responsibilities and obligations. They are working to raise enough money to continue to grant and provide safe equipment and uniforms for all players and cheerleaders.
In addition to offering improvements to keep their current participation up they are also offering a family event for anyone in the community to enjoy, the Second Annual Fun Day at Quarry Field located off 18th Street on the South Side Slopes. This date is tentatively set in October 2012.
The South Side Sabers Youth Football and Cheer Organization is a non-profit 501(c)(3).
