Officers shot at in South Side
Zone 3 police were on patrol in South Side early on Friday, June 22, when the officers observed a black man in the 100 block of McKean St. wearing all dark clothing stuffing a gun in his waistband.
The man began to run and the officers began to chase him, announcing to responding units the direction of the running suspect.
During the pursuit the officers observed another black man in a red shirt standing behind a vehicle. Officers then heard three gun shots and lost sight of the suspect on E. Carson Street.
The police returned to the vehicle where the black man in the red shirt was observed standing to ensure there was not a second suspect with a firearm.
After approaching the vehicle both doors the officers noted both the driver and passenger doors were open. The officers approached the vehicle and secured the scene.
In an effort to determine who owned the vehicle, the officers opened the glove box which had keys in the lock and observed baggies with possible heroin.
The suspect with the red shirt was taken into custody after he returned to the vehicle and told officers the vehicle was his. This actor was then transported to Zone 3 for interviewing.
This suspect was identified as Rashud Lewis, 18, from Penn Hills and charged with Possession with Intent to Deliver a Controlled Substance and Possession of Controlled Substance and Criminal Conspiracy.
Officers continued to search the area for the first suspect. A second search was conducted on S. 2nd Street for a possible second firearm which was found in the weeds.
