Mail carriers deliver for Brashear food pantry

May 29, 2012

The mail carrier delivered more than mail at Brashear Association's Henry Kauffman Neighborhood House as the South Pittsburgh agency benefited from the food collection conducted by the United States Postal Service.

Three good- humored mail carriers pulled up to the Kaufmann Center with a postal-sized truck, loaded with canned goods, pasta, peanut butter, pasta sauce, and other needed items to fill the shelves of the Kaufmann Food Pantry.

The efforts were a combination of the postal system as well as the neighbors who left bagged items on their steps and porches for mail carriers to take.

"It really amazes me how much can get accomplished when people work together," a volunteer commented as she worked at sorting the large donation, "and this donation will help so many families in the hilltop. It's just amazing."

The donation was greatly appreciated by the families who use the Kaufmann Food Pantry. Many who visited during the sorting process were touched by the care and love from their neighbors.

"All this from one day!" one family member said as she looked into the rooms, jammed with bags and bags of food, "Wow!"

The Brashear Association operates two food pantries, one at Brashear Center on South Side at 2005 Sarah Street and the other at the Henry Kaufmann Neighborhood House at 2201 Salisbury Street in Arlington. Both pantries are open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00 p.m. until 4:30 p.m.

The pantries serve low income residents from the communities of Arlington, Bon Air, Carrick, Knoxville, Mount Oliver, South Side Flats, and South Side Slopes.

Brashear's food assistance program receives support from the City of Pittsburgh/Hunger Trust Fund, administered by Pittsburgh Community Services. Those who would like more information about Brashear's two food pantries, or about ways to contribute or volunteer, visit The Brashear Association's website at http://www.brashearassociaton.org or call the main office at 412-431-2236.
