S.S. still needs direction

March 6, 2012

Why?

Why, is it the cost? To many property owners opposed to the South Side Improvement District in the South Side a Neighborhood Improvement District means more than clean streets and sidewalks.

In the early 80s, due to the loss of the steel industry, many areas in the Mon Valley were declared as depressed (Braddock, Duquesne, McKeesport and Homestead to name a few) as was the South Side. This meant many businesses were closing, storefronts were boarded up, people left and property values dropped.

The South Side Local Development Company was created on South Side with the purpose to help with business and residential problems.

Now there are new homes, many nice businesses, restaurants, shops, the SouthSide Works and property values are increasing.

Yes, some businesses are not to our liking, some businesses were lost. Mom and pop stores are gone, which in today's society are almost non-existent.

As of June 30, 2012, the South Side Local Development Company will be gone.

Maybe the NID isn't the answer, but at least it should have the opportunity to try. South Side still needs direction.
