Volleyball provides an opportunity for South Siders to get to know each other
South Side Community Council has been sponsoring volleyball games for neighborhood residents and friends on February 27. Played at the Prince of Peace gym, the game was a community building effort of board member Matthew Scoletti. The next game is planned for
Bringing people together so South Siders could meet one another and develop relationships in a fun, informal environment was the goal of Matthew Scoletti.
Mr. Scoletti, a board member of the South Side Community Council, also wanted to show that the neighborhood was more than just a bar scene. To accomplish his goal he has organized a series of SSCC sponsored volleyball games, the most recent on February 27.
The games at the Prince of Peace Church gym on 15th Street have been open to all neighborhood residents (and friends) and have drawn crowds of more than 35 people.
"I am hoping to continue these events and possibly add more in the future in order to continue to bring together neighbors and make this community as strong as we can possibly make it," Mr. Scolleti said. "And I couldn't have been happier with the turnout of 35 plus people for the volleyball game.
"Even people who didn't want to play showed up and had fun socializing with fellow neighbors while enjoying watching the volleyball game."
Playing volleyball at the Prince of Peace gym on Monday night was a new experience for Lindsay Jones. She has been living in the South Side for almost two years now and never had the chance to get involved with community recreational sports.
"I was able to meet 30 plus people and play several fun-filled games of volleyball," she said. "I ended up running into and reconnecting with old friends from college that I didn't realize were still in this area. Although I left with some sore limbs from all of the bumping, setting, spiking and even diving for the ball, I had a great time and look forward to my next opportunity to get together with such a great group of people."
Dave Ly was another area resident who "had a blast" playing volleyball saying it was something different to do during the week in South Side.
"I was looking forward to playing and now I'm just excited to hear when the South Side Community Council sets up the next event because I'll definitely be a part of it and I've already told three or four of my friends about it and they are just as excited," he said.
The next volleyball game sponsored by the South Side Community Council has already been scheduled. South Siders are welcome to come and play at the Prince of Peace Church Gym on 15th Street from 7-9 p.m. on Monday, April 23.
