County real estate tax due dates extended

Allegheny County Treasurer, John K. Weinstein has released the due dates for 2012 Allegheny County property taxes.

After receiving his weekly update on the assessment progress, Judge R. Stanton Wettick issued an order to Mr. Weinstein that sets the due dates for Allegheny County property taxes. The order states taxpayers can receive a two percent discount on their taxes if they pay on or before May 31, 2012 and the face value (no discount) of the property tax will be due if paid between June 1 and July 2, 2012.

County property taxes are usually due by March 31 at discount and April 30 at face value. This year's (2012) tax dates have been moved back due to uncertainty over what assessment values to use for tax year 2012.

In a previous ruling, the court stated all taxing bodies will use the 2011 certified values from the Office of Property Assessment and the mailing of tax bills not occur until after all reassessment notices were mailed in early March

That delay, in the mailing of tax bills, forced the due dates further into the calendar year. The court has now clarified the due dates for county property taxes with its most recent ruling.

Regarding Senior Citizens, more time has been given for them to obtain their additional discount on paying county property taxes. The filing date for Senior Citizen discount eligibility will be extended this year to July 31, 2012.

In responding to the order, Treasurer Weinstein stated, "I have received the Court Order and will commence with producing the 2012 County tax bills immediately so that the taxpayers have sufficient time to pay within the two percent discount period. I am also pleased to extend our senior discount application period to July 31 in an effort to help our senior citizens apply for this discount."
