Michener named president of Mt. O. Borough Council
— Perich replaced as solicitor —
A new president, vice-president, and borough solicitor were among the upshots of the January 3 Mount Oliver
council reorganization meeting.
Betty "Billie" Michener is the new president; Corey McGough is the new vice-president; and Deron Gabriel is the new solicitor, replacing James Perich.
Mr. Perich served in the role for more than 20 years.
The meeting began with District Justice Richard King administering the oaths of office to newly elected council members to four-year terms: Mrs. Michener, Mr. McGough, and Darnell Sains.
Mr. King also swore in Councilman George Farneth for a two-year term, and Mayor James Cassidy for a four-year term.
The meeting opened with Mr. Cassidy nominating current council President Patrick Malloy as president. Mr. Malloy withdrew from consideration.
After Mr. Sains nominated Mrs. Michener, she was elected by a 7-0 vote.
For the new vice-president, both Mr. McGough and Mr. Farneth, the current vice-president, were nominated. Mr. Farneth received yes votes from Christine Brendel, Mr. Farneth, and Mr. Malloy, and no votes from Mrs. Michener, Mr. Sains, Mr. McGough, and John Smith.
By a 4-3 vote, with yes votes from Mrs. Michener, Mr. Sains, Mr. McGough, and John Smith, Mr. McGough was elected vice-president of council.
Mr. Sains was chosen as president pro-tem by a 7-0 vote. The president pro-tem chairs council meetings in the absence of the president and vice-president.
The vote to retain Mr. Perich as solicitor was 3-4, with Mrs. Michener, Mr. Sains, Mr. McGough, and Mr. Smith voting no.
The same council members voted yes for Mr. Gabriel, giving him the position by a 4-3 vote.
Long-time borough engineer Ruthann Omer, of Gateway Engineers, will continue in the role.
Borough employees retaining their current positions are Joanne M. Malloy as secretary; Diane C. Holzer as treasurer; Charles Knaus as building inspector/building code official/fire code official; Ron Smith as street commissioner; and Steve Wilharm as ordinance officer and emergency management coordinator.
The votes for the borough employees were unanimous except for the vote to retain Mrs. Malloy as secretary. Mr. Malloy abstained from the vote concerning his wife.
In other unanimous actions, Building Inspection Underwriters/Middle-Atlantic Inspections, Inc. is the borough's official electrical inspection company; the South Pittsburgh Reporter is the official advertising agent for 2012-2014; Northwest Bank is the official depository for 2012-2014; and Beynon & Company is the official bonding company.
Mrs. Michener announced that the only committee chair she is changing at this time is making Mr. Sains the chair of Public Safety. The position was formerly held by Mr. Farneth.
The next council meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. on January 16.
