The Allegheny County Health Department has compiled a list of inspected and permitted facilities offering deer processing services for hunters.
The directory of deer processors is posted on the Health Department's web site, www.achd.net, and currently includes the following five facilities:
Elluinger's Meats, Zelienople; Hoffer's Ligonier Valley Packing, Ligonier; Jim Landis, Elizabeth Tonwhsip; Mamula Meat Packing, Aliquippa; and Vic Novak's Choice Meats, Perry Hilltop.
The listing includes the name, address and telephone number of each facility.
"We'd be happy to add more deer processors and urge others to let us know if they'd like to be listed on our web site," said County Health Director Dr. Bruce W. Dixon.
To be listed, a facility already must be inspected and permitted by the Allegheny County Health Department, the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture or the United States Department of Agriculture.
Any facility that wants to be added to the directory should email the Allegheny County Health Department at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 412-687-ACHD (2243). Hunters are encouraged to check the web site periodically for additions.
The web site also provides health and safety tips for hunters and links to a brochure by the Penn State Cooperative Extension entitled "Proper Care and Handling of Venison from Field to Table."
The Health Department developed the deer processor directory several years ago after a disreputable processor closed suddenly and left hundreds of carcasses to rot during the previous deer hunting season.
